Dans la lignée de ses prises de position pacifistes et avant-gardistes, Albert Einstein soutenait la cause végétarienne. Il considérait le végétarisme comme un idéal…
Il considérait le végétarisme comme un idéal sans pourtant le pratiquer lui-même (jusqu’a un an ou deux avant sa mort) malgré quelques problèmes de conscience (Einstein Archive 60-058).
Il considérait principalement les raisons de santé mais croyait également à l’effet bénéfique du régime végétarien sur le tempérament des hommes. (Lettre à Hermann Huth, 27 décembre 1930. Einstein Archive 46-756).
C’est seulement un an ou deux avant sa mort qu’il mit en pratique ce régime (Lettre à Hans Muehsam, du 30 mars 1954).
